CFR 1910 - General Industry
Required Course Topics By OSHA.
Introduction to OSHA Standards - State and Federal OSHA
  • OSH Act
  • General Duty Clause 5(a)(1)
  • Inspections, Citations, and Penalties (CFR Part 1903) -Identifies the elements of an OSHA
    Inspection, when they occur, why they occur, how they proceed, how to document the
    inspection, typical findings, employer rights and how to handle a citation.
  • Recordkeeping - Reviews requirements and identifies information that needs to be
    recorded and maintained by the employer.  Includes OSHA 300, 300A, 301 Accident
    Reports, Training and Employee records.

Walking & Working Surfaces, Subpart D - Reviews the general requirements, and hazards
associated with walking and working surfaces.

Exit Routes, Emergency Action Plans, Fire Prevention Plans & Fire Protection,
Subparts E & L
- Review and identification of actions and responsibilities in the even of sever
weather, major unforeseen occurrences, fires, and fatalities or severe injuries.  Review of the
basic principles pertaining to fire protection including; Fire extinguisher placement, flammable
and combustible material storage, administrative procedures and various fire protection systems.

Electrical, Subpart S - Reviews OSHA requirements, grounding procedures,
resistance, amperage and testing.
With specific option to include at least 3 topics below:
Flammable and Combustible Liquids, Subpart H  – Detailed review of storage handling and
use of flammable and combustible materials and liquids. Review specific precautions that should
be taken and regulatory requirements.

Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), Subpart I – Review information and requirements
regarding basic hand, face, eye, head, foot, ear and body protection.

Machine Guarding, Subpart O – Review of requirements for machine guarding, focus on
pinch points, rotating components and cutting surfaces.

Hazard Communication, Subpart Z – Reviews labeling requirements, Material Safety Data
Sheets (MSDS) terminology and requirements, chemical inventory and storage requirements,
and training.

Introduction to Industrial Hygiene / Blood-Borne Pathogens, and/or Ergonomics,
Subpart Z
– Identifies safe procedures for application of first-aid.  Reviews hazards associated
with BBP (Hepatitis, HIV, etc...), proper PPE and federal and state standards regarding BBP.

Safety and Health Programs

Special Industry Recommendations:
In addition to the four required hours, the groups noted below should also teach the following:
  • Medical / Health Care - Introduction to Industrial Hygiene / Bloodborne Pathogens,
    Ergonomics, PPE, Hazard Communication, and Workplace Violence.
  • Maintenance - Ergonomics, Hazard Communication, and (if applicable) Powered
    Industrial Trucks
  • Utility - Ergonomics, Power Generation, and Confined Spaces
  • Office - Ergonomics and Hazard Communication.

Lockout / Tagout, Subpart J
- Review of applicable OSHA standards, and procedures.  Identify
specific requirements for different types of energy.

Materials Handling, Subpart N  

Machine Guarding, Subpart O – Review of requirements for machine guarding, focus on
pinch points, rotating components and cutting surfaces.

Welding, Cutting and Brazing, Subpart Q – Review standard operating procedures and
safety requirements involving welding and cutting activities.  Review of welding and cutting
equipment and hazards associated with them.  

Hazard Communication, Subpart Z – Reviews labeling requirements, Material Safety Data
Sheets (MSDS) terminology and requirements, chemical inventory and storage requirements,
and training.
